# Feminine voice training Source: https://voicekata.com/feminine-voice-training Site: Voice Kata — a voice coach in your browser for the speaking voice (https://voicekata.com) A voice reads as feminine mostly from where it sits and how it moves, not from how soft it is. Two things to train: pitch — lift the whole line into the higher band and keep it there — and resonance, the brightness that stops a higher voice sounding like falsetto. **Try it:** https://voicekata.com/?for=feminine&goal=pitch — Read six short lines. The teacher stops you where a line drops back below the band or starts to push. Free, in the browser, no account. Your voice is analysed on your device and never recorded. ## Where the band is Most voices that listeners hear as feminine sit between about 165 and 260 Hz — E3 to C4 on a piano. Below that the voice reads as low whatever else it does; much above it reads as a squeak. The aim is not the top of the band. It is a comfortable spot a little inside it that you can hold for a whole sentence. Your warm-up shows where you sit now. If that is well below the band, the drill counts a line a couple of notes higher than your own baseline as progress, and only asks for the band itself once you are near it. ## How to make your voice higher without straining - Lift the whole line, not the ends. A voice that starts high and slides down on every sentence reads as low. - Keep it light. Less air, less push: a higher pitch that is forced sounds strained, and strain reads as effort, not as a voice. - Let it move. A higher voice on one note sounds flat; a little rise on the important word and a fall at the full stop make it sound like speech. Say a line, then say it again a little higher and a little lighter. Stop before it feels like work. The spot that is easy to hold is the one to practise. ## Voice feminization exercises for resonance Pitch is the note; resonance is the size of the room it rings in. A long, open throat and a low larynx make every vowel darker, and that darkness reads as low even at a high pitch. A smaller, brighter space — the larynx a touch higher, the tongue further forward, the corners of the mouth a little lifted — raises the resonances that sit on top of the note. Listeners hear that shift at least as much as the pitch itself. - Say *ee* with a small smile and feel where it buzzes: front of the face, not the chest. Keep that placement as you move to *ah* and *oh*. - Whisper the line first, brightly, then add voice without letting the placement drop back. - Keep the throat easy. Brightness that comes from squeezing sounds thin and tires the voice — it should feel smaller, not tighter. The drill measures this from the formants — the resonances the vocal tract adds above the pitch — compared with your warm-up read. Each session's focus is whichever goal was weakest last time — usually pitch or resonance. ## Why it feels wrong at first You hear your own voice through the body as well as the air, so a small lift sounds enormous from the inside and merely different to everyone else. Give the new placement a week of short sessions before judging it, and judge it from a recording, not from the feeling. ## What this is not Pitch is the first thing a listener hears, but it is not the whole of a feminine voice: weight and phrasing matter too, and the drill does not score them; resonance it does, roughly, from the formants. Voice feminization is a wider practice than one goal. If lifting the pitch hurts, or your voice tires or goes hoarse after a few minutes, stop and work with a speech-language pathologist who does gender-affirming voice work. ## How the drill trains it Your warm-up read sets your own starting pitch. Then you read six lines, and the teacher stops any line whose pitch sits below the band — or above it, or pushed — or, when resonance is the focus, any line that sits darker than your warm-up, and asks for that line again while it is fresh. The focus is whichever goal was weakest last time, usually pitch or resonance; pitch variety and clean phrase ends are checked on every line too, because a higher voice that goes flat or fries at the end stops sounding like speech. ## Related - [Less monotone](https://voicekata.com/how-to-fix-a-monotone-voice) - [Stop vocal fry](https://voicekata.com/how-to-stop-vocal-fry) - [Your speaking voice](https://voicekata.com/speaking-voice-training)
