# How to improve your speaking voice Source: https://voicekata.com/speaking-voice-training Site: Voice Kata — a voice coach in your browser for the speaking voice (https://voicekata.com) A good speaking voice is not a deeper one or a louder one. It is a voice that stays easy to listen to: it carries without pushing, it holds to the end of the sentence, it leaves room, and it moves. **Try it:** https://voicekata.com/?for=general&goal=loudness — Read six lines. Loudness first — the thing most voices need — and the teacher stops you where it slips; each guide below starts on one of the others. Free, in the browser, no account; the voice is analysed on the device and never recorded. ## What people actually hear A voice is easy to follow when several small mechanics work together. [Level](https://voicekata.com/how-to-speak-louder-without-shouting) keeps each word present without strain. [Carry](https://voicekata.com/how-to-project-your-voice) gives the sound a bright edge across a room. [Phrase ends](https://voicekata.com/how-to-stop-vocal-fry) keep support under the last word. [Pace](https://voicekata.com/how-to-speak-slower) gives each thought room to land. [Pitch movement](https://voicekata.com/how-to-fix-a-monotone-voice) shows which word matters. [Tone](https://voicekata.com/how-to-talk-clearly) keeps the voice focused instead of breathy. You do not need a new voice. Work on one quality at a time. ## Why practising against yourself works Your first warm-up read sets your usual level, ring, pauses, pitch range and tone. Every later judgement is made against that read. The target is a useful step from where you started that day, not an absolute standard made for somebody else's body. Absolute targets tempt you to force the sound. A relative target lets a quiet voice become a little stronger and an expressive voice become a little more varied without either person pushing. Vocal fry is the exception: a creaky phrase ending is heard as an event. ## The drill Pick one purpose, then make the warm-up sound like ordinary conversation. Read six short lines, one line to a breath. When a line misses today's goal, the teacher stops you, names the spot and says what to do. Redo only that line, then move on. Ten minutes is enough because the correction happens while the movement is still fresh. Belts count forms practised from warm-up to done. They never grade how your voice sounded. ## Can you improve your speaking voice on your own? Yes, you can practise level, carry, supported phrase ends, pauses, pitch movement and focused tone on your own. If speaking causes pain, you have a diagnosed voice disorder, or hoarseness lasts for weeks, work with a speech-language pathologist. ## Where to start Start with the situation where the voice matters. For presenting, find projection first. For dates or everyday talk, keep support under the ends of phrases. If nothing stands out, begin with loudness: a little more air and space makes the other qualities easier to hear. ## Related - [Speak louder without shouting](https://voicekata.com/how-to-speak-louder-without-shouting) - [Project your voice](https://voicekata.com/how-to-project-your-voice) - [Stop vocal fry](https://voicekata.com/how-to-stop-vocal-fry)
